Skills Escalator and Toolkit

This page is designed to be a useful resource of tools and web-based information in facilitating a career in the MRE sector.
To enable people to move into the marine renewable energy industry or enable workers already within the sector, we have created a means of signposting to ‘escalate’ skills, moving upwards or horizontally within the industry to optimise flexible career paths and to encourage people to enter the industry.

United Kingdom

Aqua-RET Competence Mapping Tool
The Competence Mapping Tool (CMT) for the Marine Renewables Sector is an innovative online custom-made software tool enabling visualisation of the sub-sectors, occupations and competences in the marine renewable energy sector. It can be used by various audiences; employers, employees, training organisations, awarding bodies and individuals.


Your Career in Offshore Wind Energy - The Crown Estate
This is a downloadable leaflet about careers in the Offshore Wind Industry, including an explanation of what kinds of qualifications, roles and environment characterise the industry.

RenewableUK is the UK’s trade association for the renewables industry.
Their careers page advises on choosing a career and lists current jobs in the renewables industry, including those for MRE. The page also has a job search facility.

Energy and Utility Skills Register
Individuals who qualify for registration with the Energy and Utility Skills Register are issued with a card and appear on the EUSR website. EUSR is beneficial to both employers and individuals as they move between companies or between industries. Employers have a robust way of verifying the abilities of their workers while individuals have a recognised method of demonstrating their abilities to employers.

A number of Colleges and private training providers in the UK offer accredited courses in offshore wind skills. Some of these providers also encourage trainees to learn foreign language technical vocabulary if they wish to as a means to enhance their job mobility and employability.

East of England Energy Group
EEEGR is one of the BEEMS project participants representing the offshore industry in the east of England and has a Skills For Energy programme. It focuses on delivering skilled people to the industry when they need them for long term careers and ensuring the existing workforce continues to meet the industry’s needs into the future. It is centred on addressing core skills needs across all energy sectors, both technical and commercial, achieved through collaborative partnerships.

STEMNET
STEMNET is the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network which creates opportunities to inspire young people in STEM in the UK.
It does this by working with thousands of schools, colleges and STEM employers, to enable young people of all backgrounds and abilities to meet inspiring role models, understand real world applications of STEM subjects and experience hands-on STEM activities that motivate, inspire and bring learning and career opportunities to life.
